Love Live! was originally the name of the group. Their first single "Bokura no LIVE kimi to no life" was even published under this group name. But then they got renamed to ยต's at a poll from the Dengeki's magazine. But Love Live still remained as the name for the whole franchise and got later the name of an in-world contest when the anime came out.
