The Apothecary Diaries is already an unusually tangled franchise. The series first appeared as a web novel by Natsu Hyuuga in October 2011, later reissued as an ongoing light novel series in 2014. The first of two manga adaptations followed in 2017, with Kusuriya no Hitorigoto by Itsuki Nanao and Nekokurage and Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Maomao’s Notes from the Inner Palace by Minoji Kurata. The anime adaptation, produced by Toho Animation Studio and OLM, premiered in October 2023, while a spin-off manga focusing on Xiaolan — The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Diary — illustrated by Itsuki Nanao, began in March 2025.

Most of The Apothecary Diaries’ current popularity can be credited to the anime. The 2023 adaptation propelled Maomao and Jinshi into mainstream recognition, drawing widespread praise for its animation, pacing, and voice acting.
