Examples Using This Trope Refrain from Assuming And Misattributed Song!

Hey, Just A Little Lesson In 2 Tropes, These Are Called "Misattributed Song" And "Refrain from Assuming" Anyways, A Little Breakdown In These 2 Tropes

Misattributed Song Means It Often shows up due to mis-tagged files on file-sharing services, a small-scale research mistake blossomed into widespread misinformation. Also, after some artists gain a measure of mainstream success in a niche genre or Signature Style, all songs done In the Style of that apparent artist or genre are often misattributed to them.

And Refrain from Assuming Means Most songs have the title of the song as the refrain or otherwise prominently featured in the lyrics. However, woe betide to the casual listener who assumes that this is true of all songs

Anyways, I Have Some Examples From These 2 Different Tropes!

Refrain from Assuming

  • Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang walla walla, bing bang...you surely remember that but the title is "Witch Doctor" by Dave Seville.
  • LMFAO's biggest hit "Party Rock Anthem" is not called "Everyday I'm Shuffling". The words "party rock" do appear in the chorus, but no mention of an anthem anywhere. In fact, the "Anthem" in the title refers to the kind of musical piece being sung, not a word in the song.
  • Playing Whitney Houston videos after her unfortunate passing has probably led to at least one person's surprise to find out that "Greatest Love of All", is not, in fact, called "I Believe the Children Are Our Future".

  • "Butterfly", the bubblegum Eurodance song featured in the DanceDanceRevolution series, is not by Aqua, the Vengaboys, or Toy-Box, but rather by a Swedish group called Smile.dk.
    • Although Aqua did produce a song called "Bumblebees", the song with the lyrics "Sweet little bumblebee, I know what you want from me" is not by them, but Bambee, another Danish bubblegum dance group.
    • "Butterfly" is also, oddly, sometimes misattributed to Ayumi Hamasaki, who records exclusively in her native Japanese.
  • "Dynamite" is not by Jason Derulo or Usher. It's sung by Taio Cruz. Same for "Break Your Heart".
  • The Hey Arnold! crew did not get Frank Sinatra to do Dino Spumoni's singing voice. He was in the last years of his life at that point, and he probably wouldn't have sounded like Dino did.
  • A song claiming to be an unreleased Radiohead demo from the 90s titled "Putting Ketchup in the Fridge" surfaced on the Internet in 2011. There were even news articles written about the "leaked" song... which turned out to be a 2001 song called "Sit Still" by obscure Canadian singer-songwriter Christopher Stoba, who retired from music to run a bakery.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants:
    • The show's theme song was not sang by Clancy BrownStephen Hillenburg or Tom Kenny. It was sang by Patrick Pinney.
    • Van Halen did not do the song "Sweet Victory" from "Band Geeks". Neither did KISSQueenJourneyMichael Bolton, or John Parr. The song is by David Glen Eisley, a member of a one-hit wonder 80s band called Giuffria. To be fair, Bob Kulick, the producer and one of the musicians who played on that song, was a member of KISS for a while. And as for Queen, note that this song came out long after Freddie Mercury's death.
    • "That's What Friends Do" from "Wormy" is not by REO Speedwagon or Spin Doctors
  • "Versace On The Floor" is not by Marvin Gaye, who had been dead for thirty-two years when it came out in 2016. It's by Bruno Mars.
  • The City Pop song "Stay With Me" is not by Mariya Takeuchi, but by Miki Matsubara.
  • "Plastic Love" is not by Ayumi HamasakiPuffy AmiYumi, or Utada Hikaru; it's by Mariya Takeuchi. Not to mention it came out a decade before any of the former three artists began their musical careers. The English Translated Cover Version isn't by any of the above, but by Caitlin Myers AKA mom0ki.
  • Not every Reggae song is by Bob Marley. This seems to be a problem on YouTube where songs are often accompanied by an image of Marley, regardless of who actually sang it. In most of these cases, Marley was long-dead by the time these songs were released.
